“…since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.”-John 17:2
Jesus is often presented as meek and mild, perhaps even gentle to a fault. Many paintings of Jesus suggest impotence rather than power, but Jesus has authority over all flesh. There is nothing in all of creation that is not subject to him—quite literally nothing. He possesses the power to judge, to forgive, and to grant life. It is only by his life, death, and resurrection that we have eternal life. Do we see him as the one who holds the keys to all of existence or do we, in our thoughts and words, treat him as impotent?
Jesus, forgive me for the times I have treated you as non-significant and impotent. I confess that I often turn to my own ways and try to find solutions to my problems apart from you. Comfort me with the daily reminder that you are in complete control over the cosmos. Amen.
