“I have said these things to you, that you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”-John 16:33
I wrote this entry on the last day of 2018, one of the most trying years of my life. On a national and international level, there is more division, fear, and chaos than I can remember. The brokenness found its way into homes, relationships, and individual hearts, giving way to a culture of fear.
Jesus told his disciples that in this world, tribulation would come. Chaos and tension are not unexpected, though we are often surprised by them. Regardless of our circumstances, the peace of Christ is available in him because he has overcome the world.
What does it mean that he overcame the world? Overcoming temptation, he lived his life without sin. In death, he defeated evil. In resurrection, he conquered death. When we follow him and understand that our lives are joined with his, we can have peace that the world will have no hold upon us.
Jesus, so often, I focus upon the tribulations in my life rather than upon the peace you promise. Teach me to turn again and again to you that I might rest. Amen.
