His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figures of speech! Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe you came from God.”-John 16:29-30
Even the brightest of Jesus’s disciples were confused by him sometimes. He was fundamentally different from what they had come to understand regarding religion and even life. Even though Jesus gave the disciples direct access to him so that they would understand the kingdom of God, they often didn’t get it. After Jesus revealed to them that he was going to the Father, they suddenly thought they had him figured out. Jesus confirmed their belief that he came from God, yet new confusions would arise.
When we think of God, we may come to moments of seeming clarity when we believe we have captured his fundamental essence, but there is so much we miss. Our limited understanding and our pride are no match for God’s infinity.
Jesus, so often I believe that I have figured you out, but my intellect is no match for your infinite incomprehensibility. Teach me to humbly rest in your self-revelation while taking comfort in the fact that I do not need to have all of the answers. Amen.
